Homemade Pocket Hole Jig ( With Images )

Homemade Pocket Hole Jig ( With Images )

When straight screws are not an option, pocket hole joinery is the alternative to create a strong connection. This technique usually requires a ‘pocket hole jig system’, which can be quite expensive to buy.

Luckily, we are here to show you how to DIY a pocket hole jig in a few steps, or even make a pocket hole with only one basic tool: a drill.

Homemade Pocket Hole Jig

This only works for small projects; it is a really easy way and anyone can do it following the next steps:

  • Start by drawing a line about two inches from the edge, to mark the places of the holes.

Homemade Pocket Hole Jig

  • The next step is to drill two pilot holes. These holes have to be straight and they are essential to prevent breaking off your drill bit.

  • Now all you have to do is to use your drill and keep moving it down as you drill into your pilot hole until you almost get to the edge. The length and depth will depend on the nature of your assembly.

  • There you go, now you have your two pocket holes, using only your drill!

What about if you want a proper jig and that commercial jigs are just too expensive for you?

You can actually DIY a version that will be as precise and easy.

Again, follow our step by step to avoid any confusion.

  • Use a CAD drawing

To make things easier, you might want to follow a CAD drawing. Many are available but we recommend this one because it’s easier to understand and execute.

  • Look for adequate materials to use

You can try and build your pocket hole jig out of IPE to avoid using steel sleeve inside your pilot hole. But it’s all up to you, if you feel more comfortable using steel sleeve, then go ahead!

  • Do it yourself!

You will be needing a 3/8” pocket hole drill for this. It normally comes with a lock collar that you are supposed to adjust to the depth of your hole.  This is a very tricky step because you need to be very precise to avoid messing your work up.

When you are making a pocket hole, the smaller diameter should be centered and go almost to the edge of the element you are drilling.

Now do the same on a scrap wood with the same thickness as your project element, in order to get it tested first.

What’s left to do is repeat the same procedure for all of your pocket holes, and get ready to assemble them.

We understand that pocket holes are one of the best methods to join wood pieces together. You can use glue if you want to strengthen the connection but most of the time the screws are largely enough.

This is why pocket hole jigs are Essential for woodworking, and you actually don’t need to spend much on one and still get a professional finishing!

How to Build a Gas Fire Pit

How to Build a Gas Fire Pit

If you’ve got a backyard then chances are, first comes to mind is How to Build a Gas Fire Pit? you’re going to hold a barbecue party at some point. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to need to use a barbecue grill, as there are many alternatives to it. If you’re not a big fan of barbecue grills, then your first choice is definitely going to be a gas fire pit.

Gas fire pits come with a lot of advantages that make them a no-brainer choice over any traditional barbecue grill. It’s true that they require some work at first and need to be built into your backyard, but that shouldn’t be a problem since after you read this article, you’ll be able to make one yourself in your backyard as a DIY activity.

Of course, there are a lot of things to cover with this project and everything needs to be done the right way, which is why we dedicate this article solely to make sure every house is able to make their own gas fire pit with the least number of tools possible.

Enough talk and let’s get right into it with this new DIY project!

Before we get down to the actual procedure, we need to make sure a few things are set straight. One of the most important factors of making this gas fire pit is the location, as it can either be very helpful or very troubling throughout the process.

You’re going to pick a place in your backyard that is perfect for the kind of usage you’re going after. You can either set it on an existing patio, or just on the ground, either way the area in which you set it shouldn’t be obstructing movement and shouldn’t be in the very middle of the backyard.

Somewhere near the corner or the wall is a good place.

Things to Consider

How to Build a Gas Fire Pit

Now before we start building the gas fire pit, there are a few things you should be aware of.

Let’s talk about them!

First, the gas fire pit’s design features are just as important as the location.

The size of your fire pit should be big enough for barbecuing a good amount of food, but shouldn’t be too big that you wouldn’t be using all that space.

You can make your fire pit any shape you want, but you have to know that each shape has its own ups and downs. For me, I’d make it round for easy access from all sides.

You should also think about the materials that you’ll use to make it. The materials should be strong enough not to be eaten by the constant fire, and also shouldn’t be emitting toxic gases when in contact with it.

Let’s check out the tools you’ll need to make your gas fire pit.

  • Concrete Hardscape Block
  • DIY Gas Burner Kit with Control Panel
  • Lava Rock Or Other Filler Rated for Use with Gas Fire Pits (.5 Cubic Bag or Approximately 20 Lbs Recommended)
  • 1 Vent Block (Optional)
  • Exterior-Grade Concrete Adhesive
  • One AAA Battery For Burner Ignition
  • Vapor Barrier (If Building in Grass or On Pavers)
  • Level
  • Shovel (If Building in Grass)
  • Rake (If Building in Grass)
  • Mallet
  • Caulk Gun
  • 2 Adjustable Wrenches
  • 7/16” Wrench
  • Power Drill with Phillips Bit

Now that we’ve gotten everything out of the way, it’s time to actually start building the gas fire pit, follow along for a step by step guide into how you can do it yourself!

The only thing you can’t do yourself in this DIY project is actually the first step.

Step #1:

Have a certified technician install a natural gas line to the place where you’re going to build the fire pit.

Step #2:

Clear a 40” diameter circle from grass, roots, and anything that can obstruct the building of the fire pit. After that, dig out 2 inches of soil from the same circle, and fill it back up again until it is leveled. Add up to 2 inches of paver base.

Step #3:

Now it’s time to install the vapor barrier. After that, lay a ring of hardscape blocks in a circle, just make sure the interior diameter is anything more than 32 inches.

For the hardscape block, you should use 4-inch tall tumbled radius pavers.

Step #4

While keeping enough space for a control panel vent block, place the second ring of concrete block.

Step #5

Now it’s time to make everything stick together. To do that, slowly remove 1 block at a time and apply concrete adhesive. Put the blocks back where they were and apply some pressure to make sure they are stuck together.

Step #6

Now it’s time to assemble the burner you’ve got and carefully place it on top of the concrete block ring. Make sure the burner has at least 1-inch overlap over the ring so that it is secure.

Of course, you’re going to need to use the burner’s manual to make sure you’ve got everything right when assembling it.

Step #7

Now you should add a third layer of concrete block, this time over the burner you just installed. Follow the same previous steps and apply the adhesive to make sure everything is secure together.

After this step, all you have to do is light up your fire and gather everyone around for a nice barbecue.

We hope this article was very beneficial for you and that you were able to build your own DIY gas fire pit. The whole process shouldn’t take you any longer than 3 hours!

DIY Keychains That Can Serve As Gifts

Materials needed:

  • Paracord 550: 1×40 cm-16 inches (color of your choice)

1×50 cm-19 inches (color of your choice)

  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  • Measuring tape
  • Long-nose pliers

Starting with the head, fold the cord in half, and leave a small loop on the top and tie a “diamond knot” (to be adjusted later). Then adjust the loop to the desired length, after that finish the knot. Shape the knot and tighten it slightly.

For the ears, cut about 10cm-4 inches of the cord, and pull the inner strands out. Melt one end to create a needle out of paracord, then thread the cord through the middle of the knot, and tighten it slightly, cut the ends to the same lengths, then shape them into the form of ears. Now, use the long-nose pliers and tighten the knot firmly.

For the body, take the other cord and fold it in half, place the middle behind the center strands and tie the first knot, you’ll need to place the right strand over the left strand and pull the left strand through the loop, tighten the knot firmly and push it towards the “diamond knot”. Then, turn the figure to the backside, place the right strand over the left strand and pull the left strand through the loop. And keep repeating the process…

For the sleeves, cut about 10cm-4 inches of the cord and pull the inner strands out, then rotate the center strands a little. After that, tie a knot by placing the right strand over the left strand and pull the left strand through the loop. Hold the knot with open loops, then place the cord for the sleeves between the center strands and over the loops. Set the sleeves in the desired position and tighten the knot towards the previous one. Then turn back to the previous step of making the body. Make sure you tighten the last knot very firmly. And the final step would be to cut the sleeves to the desired length and melt the ends slightly and carefully. And tada! You get a cute baby Yoda keychain

Leather Tassels

DIY Keychains That Can Serve As Gifts

This handmade leather tassel keychain can serve as a good gift. You can make them in all special and unique sizes and shapes.

Materials needed are:

  • A piece of nice and soft leather (cut it depending on the tassel you’re going to need)
  • To make the loop: leather lacing
  • For toppers: some brass hardware ( compression sleeves and compression nuts)
  • Some tacky glue
  • Rotary cutter
  • A cutting mat
  • A ruler
  • A pen

Start by cutting the leather using the pen and the ruler, make sure that the shiny side of the leather is going to be the outside of the tassel. Then draw a line about half an inch from the top, take your pen and draw the line around the top, this line will show you where to stop cutting your fringe.

After that, take your rotary cutter and your ruler and depending on you’re a right or a left, about an eight-inch at the end, start cutting the material and stop where the line is, and you just keep repeating that until you get to the end of your leather, it will all be fringed. Make sure to always use a rotary cutter because the scissor won’t give the same straight parallel line.

Once your fringe is cut all the way cross, grab your leather lacing and then you’ll be ready to make the loop. Using the tacky glue, add a few drops to the ends to make sure they stick together.

Then by starting on the left side, add a nice big drop of the glue to the very end, this will make sure that the loop is secured inside the tassel, then attach it to the end of your fringe and carefully wrap your leather by pressing very tightly and start rolling the edge of the leather, then start measuring your topper that will fit best, after that take a little bit of glue and put it at the very end and then wrap it tightly, place it over the loop before it dries and gently screw it down until it fits.

Materials needed:

  • Small rings
  • Polymer clay
  • Pliers
  • Key ring
  • Small chain

For instance, if you want to make an orange, take one piece of orange clay to make the fruit and another of green one to make the leaf, roll them to have small balls, put the orange clay in an orange shape, and the green one in shape as well. Create the small holes by using a toothpick. This is applicable to any fruit shape. Then bake them, once they’re cold, polish them with transparent oil. Take the pliers and pass a small ring through the holes, attach the fruits and leaves together, and attach them to the key ring. And that’s it!

Pom Pom Keychain

This particular keychain is probably the most famous, it’s fun to make and pretty easy, too.

Materials needed:

How To Make DIY Bed Risers

How To Make DIY Bed Risers

Are you struggling with bugs and want to isolate and guard your bed against them? Do you sleep on a bed that’s too low that is feels as if you’re sleeping on the floor?

I know those feelings because I have ever been there before. And that is not cool at all!

You definitely need bed risers.

Why bed risers?

Bed risers create useful storage space under the bed. So even if you don’t need to raise your bed and you don’t mind it being short, this is one of the reasons you should do so.

If you are a college student who lives in a small and shared dorm room, or you are accommodated in a tiny apartment in the city, or just somebody with a shopping addiction like me, the more storage space you can use the better.

It comes in handy for off-season clothes, storing handbags (you ladies know what I mean), keeping old textbooks that you don’t want to get rid of, or for whatever other reason you might need extra storage space.

Though most people use bed risers to make additional room for storage, this isn’t the only reason you may want to raise your bed.

Bed risers make it easier to get in and out of bed, together with providing the upscale appearance of a bed that is higher off the ground.

If you have a minimalistic bed, you could produce more space using bed risers.

Based on your requirements, you’ll have the ability to lift the bed to 3, 5 or 8 inches over the floor.

Why DIY bed risers if you can just buy them?

Of course, you can purchase bed risers for a cheap price, but I have used those before and I don’t believe they were sturdy enough.

DIY bed riser is a handmade, better and sturdier alternative that will change your life.

Want to build yourself a set? Keep reading…

You can create super simple DIY bed risers for little to no money, using whatever you have got at home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fence Posts (or any other available wood, as long as it is strong and thick enough.)
  • Miter Saw or Hand Saw
  • Mod Podge
  • Gold Foil Paper
  • Power Drill
  • 1 Inch Drill Bit (to make the hole)
  • Felt

Steps to make bed risers:

  • Always be sure you have all of the critical tools, material, and space ready.
  • First determine the height you want to add to your bed legs, then figure out how to raise your bed safely.
  • Since there are no sides, but the wood you’ll be using on a table and ask someone to help you hold it in position.
  • Start cutting the wood according to the measurements you’ve already made.
  • Using your large drill bit, make a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch (or deeper if you want), and indent the top of the wood.
  • Double-check to make sure your indention is large enough to hold your bed frame leg without too much wiggling.

If it’s not, then just use your bit to expand the hole slightly, but be careful not to go too deep and ruin the riser.

  • You want it to be snug, so it is safe and holds your bed right.
  • If you don’t mind the treated wood look, you can be done now!
  • But I chose to make mine look like gold bricks. Using gold metallic wrapping paper, I cut pieces to wrap around the risers.
  • I applied Mod Podge to the paper and lined up the bottom of the riser to the bottom of the paper, then I kept applying Mod Podge and tightly rolled and wrapped the riser.
  • The last step was to fold the remaining paper around the top, kind of like a present, and trim the excess away from the indent.
  • That’s it! Lift up your bed and put on your risers, and enjoy the free storage space you’ve just got for yourself.

Other uses for bed risers?

You are going to not only have the additional size of the bed but the attractiveness of the space below the bed.

Risers can be set below computer desks, tables or any other piece of furniture that you might want to lift from the floor to earn more space and get more comfortable in your room.

If you still want more space, I’d recommend you also build a DIY bed frame for any mattress size.

Efficient Ways to Clean Dry Erase Boards

Efficient Ways to Clean Dry Erase Boards

Do you own a Dry Erase Board or looking for one, but you’re worried about the cleaning process of it?

Stop overthinking it. We got just the right and most effective tools and methods to keep it spotlessly clean after every use!

For a dry erase board, it’s going to be vital that you learn the right procedures to take care of and clean out the whiteboard to keep it looking brand new for a long time to come.

If you are trying to find the most affordable dry erase board then you need to go after melamine dry erase boards. You will need the caliber of a non-staining surface but not magnetism; porcelain boards are not the, most, ideal choice.

A number of the highest-quality dry erase boards are made from glass and are incredibly heavy. They exist in a huge variety of sizes, shapes, and mounting options and they’re easy to find.

Dry Erase Boards Cleaning Tools:

When you want cleaning to be simple and easy, and when the money is an important factor to you, you can buy the cleaning items from a paint or hardware shop at some cheap prices. Cleaning a dry erase board is a rather straightforward process that you can carry out in few ways.

You should erase notes once you are finished with them. You might have to repeat the procedure two or three times.

This will ensure that stain does not stick to your board. There are many tools and recipes you can apply when you want to clean your whiteboard from marker stains, the following are some of the best options out there and are available right at your kitchen:

  • Vinegar: It is cheap and available at any household’s kitchen. Mixing a little bit of vinegar with water and using the mix to erase your board can do wonders.
  • Toothpaste: If you have any stubborn stains on your board, then toothpaste is your go-to solution.
  • Hand Sanitizer: If you own any bottle of alcohol based hand sanitizer, then you can clean off stains from most smooth surfaces.
  • Hairspray: This one takes a few steps. All you have to do is spray some of it on your board, wipe it off, then wash everything with soap and water.

After you wash out the board, you may be able to see how well it eliminates dry marker. Some cleaning techniques will damage the face of the whiteboard and lessen your writing space, leaving plenty of stain marks. So, you should be careful not to use anything that is too harsh on surfaces.

With the right care, it is going to have a very long life as opposed to your regular whiteboards. The rinsing and drying steps are very crucial, that, if ignored, may lead to your whiteboard not functioning the way it is supposed to, making the surface slippery and the marker not properly functioning on it.

A fast swab of alcohol from time to time will make that board shine as a brand new one. If you find any rust on your board, consider using a magic eraser to eliminate it.

These boards can be entertaining and useful for multiple purposes, especially if you have little children.

It is important to find the right option that is easily cleanable and on which stains do not remain after erased.

Easy Steps to DIY Troll Hair

Easy Steps to DIY Troll Hair

If you’re a parent, then you must have had to take your kids see the movie Trolls in the past few

years. Some kids have gotten over it, and others are still bugging their parents everyday for them to give them the same they hair the characters in the movie had.

The movie itself is great and is a wonderful change from the usual prince and princess movie

everyone keeps making for kids these days. But that’s not what your kids have noticed, and that’s not what caught their attention.

Since you’re here, that means you’ve been looking for tutorials on how you can create the same hair effect Princess Poppy had. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard it looks, once you start making it yourself, you’ll realize how fun and easy it is. And the result is that your kids will think you’re the coolest parent ever.

It’s actually super easy to put the hair together and will take you less than 30 minutes to get

everything done if you follow these 5 steps.

First, we need to talk about the supplies you’ll need for this DIY project;

– Ribbon

– Headband

– Flowers

– Glue gun

– Scissors

– Tulle

First, you’re going to want to cut the tulle into stripes.

You then grab the tulle and knot it around the headband. You may want them to be a little tight.

Remember that the tighter the tulle is, the more tulle you’ll need. And if you use a lot of tulle, the flo ?? will be very thick, which is what you would want the end result to be.

After that, if you’re happy with the thickness of your tulle around the headband, it’s time to gather them together. Gather the tulle up into the signature Troll shape. Turn over the headband and add a small amount of glue near the top and make sure you scrunch the hair together.

If the hair doesn’t stick together and give you the shape that you want, keep adding more glue until you reach the desired shape.

Once you’re done with that, it’s time to start decorating by adding some ribbon and flowers.

Using the glue gun, attach the ribbon just about ?? the headband and then add the flowers on top of it. You can use the same glue gun to make sure the flowers are well attached to the headband.

If you’ve followed the steps correctly, then Congratulations! You have just made yourself, (or your

children), a really cool Princess Poppy hair.

We hope you have enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial on how you can make your kids some DIY Troll hair.

It was super fun for us to make and we’re sure you and your kids will have so much fun making it

together; it’s a great bonding activity.
